What Is an Account, Really?

7 Sep 2026

On Solana, an account is a container with an address, an owner program, lamports, and data. It may hold money, state, program code, or the metadata that makes another object legible.

The word sounds familiar enough to be misleading. An account is not automatically a person or a wallet. It is one of the places the network stores what exists.

Programs define rules, but state lives in accounts. Transactions bring instructions and a list of accounts into the same signed decision.

Reading Solana begins by asking what each account is, who owns it, whether it is writable, and why an instruction needs it.
